Title: Shadows Rating: PG Prompt: Villains Category: up to 250 Word Count: 213 Summary: Future Tortallan historians looking back at Kel's defeat of Blayce
From the moment history was made, people lost their sight. Lies blinded them, obscuring perception with a fragile veil. Stories were left untold and replaced by evidence. Moments were disconnected from time, people plucked from memory. Events stained with gossip and dyed by untruths. People forgot. This made them lose themselves. This made the world shift.
The story tells us that they saved everyone who mattered: children, mothers, and the do-gooders. The story tells us that they rid the world of a nightmare and his dog. Evidence presents us with the people they killed, their plots now lying outside rotten castles and hidden deep in forests. Events took place that now have no memory. Bones with no flesh. They tell us half a story. Give us a missing picture, like a man with no shadow.
We were supposed to think that everything was necessary: drugging the soldiers , lighting up the castle -all those priceless artifacts!-, and killing those who fought because they were told to. We half remember these accomplishments now, but the bones are compelling and we put it from our minds. Heroes turn to villains, villains are found innocent. For why be called guilty when no one remembers what they did or who they were?
The shadows always catch up.

Oooh. Does the end justify the means?
(The loss of priceless artifacts makes me flinch a little. It's like a curator's nightmare.)

I love the detached voice you've created while using such powerful words. Very nice!
