Summary: Jon helps a friend in need. For Kat.
She is Raoul's girl.
But Raoul is drinking himself into oblivion, and probably can't even make out Cythera's face. It isn't an excuse, but neither of them can deal with it. Not right now. Her castles in the sky are dissipating into nothing, diluted by alcohol, making way for thick rainclouds.
His own tangible palace is in danger of crumbling too, and Raoul is a dead-weight around Jon's shoulders as he helps his friend back to his room. Cythera is on the other side, but her slight frame barely makes a difference, except to make Raoul mutter thick, slurred apologies.
Jon echoes these apologies once Raoul's door is shut on him, and Cythera manages a half-smile, placing a steadying hand on his shoulder. "You have enough to worry about," she says, her blue eyes earnest.
It is too much for him, and he kisses her without thinking, without caring who might see them, vaguely aware that she's pushed up against the door of the one person who really shouldn't see this, and he doesn't know whether that's good or bad.
She tastes like alcohol, like Raoul, and that more than anything brings him back to his senses. He presses his lips to her cheek, chaste and apologetic, and leaves her without a word.
It seems too much like coincidence that he receives a report on Alanna the very next day.
He sends Raoul to fetch her back.
