Summary: It was obvious to Miri that somewhere down the line, something had gone wrong with Daine. Interesting Times AU.
Almost as soon as Daine became her friend, Miri began to worry about her. She worried about the girl’s twin, too, but more about Daine, who spoke so little and avoided so much.
Daine didn’t seem to want to speak; if a trainee was messing up she would appear as if by magic next to them and wordlessly point out their errors, hiding in her silence. Dren seemed to speak for her- on that night when the Stormwings came Miri was convinced she had heard both twins shouting, but when people arrived and the excitement was over, both Dren and Daine white and shaking, Dren had spoken for both of them.
It didn’t take Miri long to guess that Daine had been seriously hurt. She entertained a few alarming possibilities, only succeeding in scaring herself, and dismissed them all for lack of evidence. All she could hope was that if people talked to Daine enough but didn’t crowd her, gave her time to trust them and didn’t give up on her, then maybe Daine would heal again.
She wondered what Daine had been like before, chatty or sweet, cheeky or sly, and hoped that one day she would find out.
