The Conte kids totally spend summers on the road with Thayet - especially while they're younger, & some of them keep tagging along through college, I think.

I missed this thread, and I am not entirely sure how! It is amazing craziness. And I love the idea of an open AU! Oh, yes. Definitely. Roald's trying to keep everyone from arguing, Kalasin's texting her new boyfriend Kaddar every second minute, Lianne's obsessively practising scales and learning Aural for her Grade Eight piano exam, Liam's flirting with anything that moves, Jasson is trying not to be carsick, and Vania is running around getting under people's feet, asking questions about amplifiers and skiving off her flute practice... I don't think the Riders have been covered: would it be a record label, do you think? Or a band? Evin lead singer, Padrach on drums, Farant playing the guitar and Miri playing keyboard and occasionally telling lies for the boys ('Uh, no- sorry, Evin's not here- he had to go to hospital, broke his wrist... look, why don't you give me your number and I'll give it to him?' 'Farant? Sorry. He's on the phone to his girlfriend in New York right now... Why, did you want something?')

Bringing this thread back to say that I envision Alanna in this AU in a role similar to Kitty Wells or Patsy Cline in real-world country music.
And Kel's a follower?
Roald met the very pretty, very wealthy Shinko in Japan, on tour? He brought her home and everybody loved her (himself included) so they got married.
Kalasin and Kaddar almost want to stay out of the public eye, but being young, famous and 'hot', they draw the attention.

There is lots and *lots* of RPF.
Says Roald to Kaddar, "But - But - you're my brother-in-law!"

I think it was discussed back a bit - or in the thread that made this one exist - that Numair is special effects and Daine is Numair's fiancee, taking time from her veterinary practice to travel with them.
Also, Kitten the Iguana!

But... but - Shinko should totally be a J-Pop star in her own right! ^__^ I can see Shinko, Yuki and Lady Haname being in some kind of group, like Morning Musume or something like that.

And either Shinko's or Yuki's family totally hosted Kel in a foreign exchange program years and years ago!

Or Kel is a military-brat and was forced to move around when mom and dad travelled while her siblings stayed at boarding schools back in the States (or wherever this is taking place)?

Or a diplomatic kid works, too.

Piers is the ambassador to Japan and Kel, being quite young, is dragged along while the rest of the sibs are in schools or with relatives or married.

Diplomatic kid fits. In my experience, quite a lot of diplomats' children over the age of about eleven go to boarding school if their parents go overseas, but younger ones mostly tag along (speaking as a tag-alonger, this can be in equal measures uncomfortable and incredible). Piers and Ilane could have had the older ones in boarding schools, and taken Adalia, Oranie, Kel and (presumably) Avinar along with them?
Also, I thought Numair was a mechanic? Rescuing Peachblossom the Tourbus from an explosive death? *confused*
*snicker* Someone has got to write that!

Numair's the jack-of-all-trades-roadie... a little bit of tech (sound, amps and lighting) and the semi-mechanic for Peachblossom-the-Grumpy-Bus. Auto mechanics are not his 'thing', but he knows enough to be of use.
Neal's father, the somewhat disapproving doctor, Baird, is all: "WTF? Why?" but he's a fan of Kel's.
Alanna, as we discussed, is kinda the reigning queen of the genre, in semi-retirement.
George, in his younger days, started out as a bouncer/security/bodyguard type, and he used to manage/produce a few rock acts when he met Alanna.
After they married, when Alanna was on the road, he became a stay-at-home father to the kids? And now he's helping her support Kel in secret and maybe doing a bit of security work for other acts on the label?

Well, in non-AU world, they do come from entirely different backgrounds, right? Alanna's the country diva, George is the slightly rough-and-tumble rock and roll producer... This is fun.

I envision Roald I, in this AU, in a role similar to Sam Phillips, in real-world music. (Phillips produced young!Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison. He's considered to be responsible for the emergence of '50s rock and roll.) Very important, very influential, etc. Died too early - I'm thinking car wreck - and left his son to turn things on their heads. Haven't decided whether or not Lianne died in the same wreck - or separately of some terminal illness. Have we come up with a role for Thom I? I had considered putting him in a scholarly/scientist role, but I couldn't come up with a way to explain his death plausibly (without resorting to 'Thom blew up the lab.') I'm seeing him now as a mixture of young!Elvis, Brian Jones (former guitarist for the Rolling Stones) and a little bit of Angus Young's or Bon Scott's doing things for the shock value attitude. This AU!Verse Thom is *very* talented and unconventional, compared to his sister, who's more of a traditionalist (to some degree), but dies young due to drugs/alcohol or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, involved with the wrong people (Roger?). Also, Alanna and Thom picked up music from their mother, who died when they were children or young teens? (Her dying in childbirth makes sense for Tortall verse, but not so much for modern western world AU.) I finally found Coram a spot in this mess, too - he's Alanna's protector when she plays the rough bar circuit, he keeps an eye on her, weeds out the crazies backstage or at signings, stops them from breaking into her dressing room, brings her water, that kind of thing. (Police or military background, probably.) Rispah is still George's cousin - Alanna spies her one night and goes to playing matchmaker? Eleni is, of course, George's Ma; a registered nurse, I think. Also, I'm having far too much fun with this AU. Darn.
