Title: Distillation Rating: PG Prompt: No longer burdened by what's left behind Summary: Sometimes, pleasure can be her purpose
“I don’t know why you brought me here.”
Rosethorn shifted, looking around the rapidly crowding square with narrowed eyes. “If we’re not going to work, Lark, then we should go back. “
Lark smiled. “I brought you here to show you something lovely, that’s all. And you’ve been working all day.”
“Well.” Rosethorn sniffed. “So have you.” She fidgeted with the sleeves of her habit, keeping her voice low as people milled about, laughing and loud and varied. “I feel conspicuous.”
“You’ve never minded that.”
“Not when I’ve a purpose,” snapped the young Dedicate.
“Pleasure has a purpose.”
Drums had started up, soft and insistent and reforming the crowd’s noise into new and urgent shapes. Rosethorn glared at her foot even as she tapped it against the stone. “It’s not my purpose.”
Lark laughed, taking Rosethorn’s hand and tapping out the pulse with her thumb, warm staccato against her friend’s wrist. A flute, warmed and well-impatient, swirled and trilled around them all, and Rosethorn’s breath caught.
“It’s mine, Rosie. Sometimes.”
“Hah. You say that n—”
“Hush,” said Lark. “Open your eyes and watch the dancing.”
Two young women in green were a blur from the stage, as the great Yazmin Hebet bowed to festival crowds.

It's very Rosethorn, to not quite believe in pleasure for its own sake -- and very Lark, especially young!Lark, to convince her.
