Title: Protection
Rating: R
Prompt: Magic
Summary: Onua's magic isn't good for much, but she puts it to good use when her husband comes home drunk...
WARNING: Abuse triggers.
“Tahoi. Tahoi, come here.” The dog ran over to her, whining, and Onua hugged him close to her good side. Usually, her magic wasn’t good for much, but she was glad for it at times like these. Trying to both act quickly and be careful of the stabbing pain in her ribs, she sprinkled the handful of salt and the bowl of water that she’d snatched from the kitchen in a line in front of her. Finally, she let red fire spill from her hands into the line, sealing herself and Tahoi into the corner. She was just in time; he came stumbling back into the room.
“So you think you can hide from me?” he slurred, looking around the room. “Stupid bitch, I’m going to find you sooner or later.” He staggered around the room, checking in cupboards and under tables, until he walked right into Onua’s magical shield. “Found you,” he announced with a drunken guffaw. “What you don’t realise is that you’re actually doing me a favour, I don’t have to look at your ugly face.” She huddled into Tahoi, making no sound even though he knew she was there. It came as no surprise, but she couldn’t help but flinch as his foot struck out and hit her barrier. His anger grew, and she buried her head in Tahoi’s fur as he lashed out repeatedly, praying that her magic would hold. Finally, he stumbled out of the house, exhausted, slamming the door behind him. Onua curled up against Tahoi, glad with the knowledge that at least for now, she was safe.
