Briar was very young when he lost his mother and either even younger when he lost his father or his father was never a part of his life. I don't think the Thief Lord made a good substitute parental figure, even if he tried to give that vibe or if Briar wanted him to be.
How different do you think Briar would have been if he'd know his father or his mother hadn't died so young? Not just in his situation in life, but in his personality and attitude too. Do you think his magic would have been discovered earlier if he'd had a proper parental figure watching over him?

Assuming that Briar's mother was only a cut above the streets (I think it says that in one book?), I think his magic could have been 'discovered' in the sense that he may have either found work as a sort of gardener's assistant or coaxed plants and vegies to grow at home/in a patch near his house. It's more likely it would've gone wrong if he hadn't trained it; that, or acted out in some weird way, like the moving plants and the briar scar, which would've freaked people out. Maybe he would've been discovered by a mage later on. Because this is CoM we don't get to see many nasty violent sides of the streets, and anyway we know Briar was better off than he would otherwise have been in some ways, because of the shelter of his gang and from having grown up on the streets and basically knowing his way around, who to trust and how to fight. But in a slightly more respectable environment he might've been drawn into street life anyway when he was older, and conned really badly into theft, drugs or worse. That is, assuming there are things like drug smuggling, etc. in Hajra. But then again, he might've ended up relatively respectable, learnt basic reading and other skills and found himself a job at ten or eleven. Now I want to see this AU Briar!

It's my headcanon that Briar's father was a soldier that died when Briar was a baby.
To be perfectly honest, I still think Niko would have found him. If I remember correctly he was actively looking for kids with ambient magic, otherwise he never would have been in Hajra to begin with.

It's my headcanon that Briar's father was a soldier that died when Briar was a baby. I like this idea. Possibly because it could be a more romantic situation where the father didn't just leave once he discovered Briar's mother was pregnant.

the other half of that headcanon is that Briar's mother was actually quite wealthy and left it behind to marry his very poor father, and when he died they made do with what little they had until she passed away.
