Title: Something New
Rating: PG
Prompt: #98 Mistletoe
Summary: A New Hope goodbye.
Snow had fallen the day before, but it had turned to dirty sludge quickly; from her window Kel could see heavy clouds that promised more, but if she didn’t have the reports finished by tonight then she would be spending the remainder of Midwinter locked in her room.
A knock at the door interrupted her wallowing, and she gratefully called out, “Enter!”, placing her pen back in its stand.
For once, her stomach didn’t do little flip-flops at the sight of Dom. Perhaps it was the stress. But when he smiled and closed the door behind him, she couldn’t resist smiling back at him. “Sergeant,” she said in greeting. “I take it everything’s on schedule for tomorrow morning?”
“Freak accidents permitting,” he said, eyes twinkling. “I think the men are too eager to see their families this time, so we shouldn’t have any delays in leaving.”
She nodded. “Do you have any plans for the holidays?”
“Not particularly. Catching up with the family, then catching up on some sleep.”
“Sounds perfect,” she said wryly.
“Almost,” Dom said.
Before she could fully register what was happening, he had crossed the small space between them and leaned down to press his mouth to hers. She could hardly think: all she could do was kiss him back. His lips were slightly chapped from the wind, and his clothes smelled of horse, but that fluttering feeling had returned with full strength. She would have been just as giddy if it had only been a friendly kiss on the cheek, but it wasn’t—oh, it wasn’t.
She was faintly surprised to see a pink flush rise in his cheeks when they pulled away from each other, and his grin was bashful. “I thought—I thought you might feel that way,” he said, his hand still resting on the back of her chair. “But I decided to wait until Midwinter to find out for sure. Mistletoe, and all.”
Kel drew her eyes away from his to glance about the room, puzzled. “There’s no mistletoe in here,” she said.
“Guess you’ll just have to use your imagination,” Dom said, and she had to kiss him again, putting her hand to the back of his neck to pull him in. Something told her that her imagination would get plenty of use between now and his return to New Hope.
