Title: Adjustments Rating: G Prompt: Adjustments, (#92) Summary: They adjust. Kel learns the world can still go on. Notes: AU.
-
“Excellent work, squire,” Sir Gareth the Younger said, glancing up at her from the stack of papers that currently occupied his attention. “The books can go here—yes, that’s right. Thank you.”
I will not cry, Kel told herself, firmly. I’m still doing my duty. I am stone.
It got a little easier every day. Just a little.
She left the pile of dusty books where her knight-master had indicated. “What else do you require, sir?”
-
Lord Wyldon eyed her impassively as Kel made it into the training yard just before the bell, leading Peachblossom beside her. “Next time, Mindelan,” he said, “Come earlier.”
“Yes, my lord,” Kel said. She’d spent those precious extra minutes returning the books Sir Gareth no longer required. The palace librarians were more than familiar with her by now, and they were helping her learn her way around the catalogues and indexes.
A desk knight, she thought. Her knight-master was a desk-knight. She’d just have to work harder. No one would give her desk work then.
You’re being unfair to your knight-master. It was true, and Kel felt guilty. Sir Gareth was a nice man, for all she’d wanted a knight who rode a destrier and not a desk.
She yanked her attention back to the present, and just in time. “Mount up,” Lord Wyldon ordered, climbing up into the high-backed tilting saddle.
Sergeant Ezeko was already waiting with the padded lances.

Now I'm sad. But this is really nicely written!

Ah, love this! (even for all it's sadness)
This line, particularly: It got a little easier every day. Just a little.

Poor Kel. It was what she did not want, and I loved the way you wrote her dealing with it, stoic and noble and disappointed.

I liked that bit about Gary being nice. It makes desk-work harder for Kel to handle, because she can't even take out her frustration on hating Gary. I agree with Kris that you've written her dealing with this in such a Kel way.
