It might be a China/Tibet type situation, since Yanjing is Tammy's China.
But yes, my understanding is the Temple is in Gyongxe, the Emperor is invading Gyongxe and so the three set off for the Temple/Gyongxe to warn them. I can't remember if they were meant to be in Yanjing before that though.

Good point, Kyp! Yeah, the books weren't too clear on that.

I think the excerpt that Tammy read on YouTube a while back, stated that {Spoilers}they were in Yanjing as guests of the Emperor and were being aggressively, almost, shown his gardens in a way quite similar to Berenene. So they were actual guests of the Emperor and staying in the palace. Not quite the impression I had from WotE or MS. So that made me quite confused, as I thought it went down quite differently, in how everything happened, so I'm preparing myself for my head-canon to be jossed. I'm just really hoping that anything that was explicitly stated in WotE or MS doesn't get contradicted like in Mastiff, even if it is minor details.

I wasn't expecting that either, but it actually does make sense as to how they would have heard about the invasion/attack at all. Spoiler:If they were guests in the palace, they might have heard of the plans and then fled from there, to warn the temple before the army arrived.

Actually, yes, that's what the Amazon blurb (not the excerpt, but what will presumably be on the back of the book) says:
So yeah, Gyongxi is apparently a separate country. And I vaguely recall something in WotE about how the Yanjingyi emperor would give a small fortune to be able to grow shakkans as small as Berenene's.

A support group sounds like a great idea for BM! Can we start it now to deal with the disappointment of the later release date? Haha, sounds like a plan, Kyp! There's an excerpt on Amazon that sounds like we might need it. Agreed. We definitely need a support group. The worst part is that we know how traumatised all the characters are from the events of BM thanks to WoE. And now we have to wait even longer to find out details. At least we know no one dies (permanently, at least). I'm also super excited because the excerpt Tammy read was third person from Rosethorn's POV -- I love Rosethorn and can't wait to get some further insight into how she thinks.

Ooh, Rosethorn POV sounds awesome!!! Eeeeee, Rosethorn PoV! Squee. I hope we get some Lark PoV, too (I know, wishful thinking). Also, letters from Rosethorn to Lark or vice versa would be adorable and awesome and gah.

Tammy's website says the Australian paperback of BM will be released "concurrently with the US hardcover"! So we won't have to wait months!

Just a note, despite Tammy's site saying that, the US release of Mastiff was October 25, 2011 and the Australian release date was December 1, 2011. I think there also may have been roughly a week delay between the US and Australian releases of T&OL, and I think Bloodhound as well. But we can hope that there will be no delay

Noooo. Thanks for that info Rachy. This makes me sad now, judging from previous patterns. Drat you, Australian publishers. Or whoever ensures we're behind the American release. Then again, I guess there's always Amazon.

Hello, I thought I just bought Battle Magic on Kindle, but it seems that I pre-ordered it! It states that it will be released on Oct 1, 2013. Hopefully that is just for Kindle.

I found an excerpt!!! Someone posted it on Goodreads, it's the same one I read when I was looking up Battle Magic in Chapters! {Click to read!}Suddenly lines and circles moved and rose. Briar stood on a hillside. He looked down to find himself in armor, wearing the bead necklace, holding a bead in his hand. He looked out over the stony ridge before him, seeing the thinnest trail of smoke rise from behind it. "Tell the men ready." The order seemed to come from his own throat.
"Ready!" cried a soldier at his side.
Together the men at his command set their weapons: bundles of tubes shaped like arrows bound together at the end. Long fuses trailed from the end of each tube and were twined together to form one big fuse.
With his finger Briar traced the image of one line until it met a dot and an enclosing circle on the wooden bead. He put forth a little magic, raising the picture of all three into the air above his necklace. Steering the line with his finger, he shifted it until it pointed straight at that thin column of smoke. He nodded at the man beside him.
That man shouted, "Burn!"
The soldiers touched flame to the single long fuse on their weapons. It burned swiftly through the twist. The moment each of the smaller fuses fell free, on fire, Briar said, "Loose."
The man next to him shouted, "Loose!"
The soldiers on the catapult let their strange weapons fly. They soared high into the air, trailing smoke and the mingled scents of sulfur and boom dust. The ground shook. Earth, trees, and rock spouted high into the air where the weapons must have struck.
Trying to hide his trembling, Briar wound the length of beads around his hand. If soldiers saw these rockets coming through the air and ran to get out of the way, the general could simply redirect them with his finger and the flat willow target beads. What other monstrosities for war did the emperor have up his very wide sleeves?

Ohhh...part of me wants to read it, but part of me wants to know nothing so I can completely immerse myself in the book when it comes out! I just realised that I'll be overseas when it comes out, so I probably won't be able to read it until I come back

From Tammy's comment on a Mark Reads entry today: Amazon says 24 September! But I'm glad it's only been pushed back a month at worst or a few days if we're lucky. .

I was about to get really sad. And then I realised that I had had October in my head as the release date, so I checked what I had for the countdown, and that was October 1. But then I just checked Book Depository which is where I preorder most of my books from (boo that its not there in paperback), and that also says September 24. So maybe it's a bit earlier? Weird! And speaking of weird, it seems like Evvy and her magic are going to be a bit of a focus, judging by the short description: It's also listed as being 352 pages hardback. I compared that to Melting Stones, and it's 30 pages longer, but 200 or so pages shorter than WOTE.

I'll miss the rest of the Circle, though. Haha, "making stones... do things," sounds weird. I mean, it's possible they didn't know what Evvy's exact ability would be, but they could've made it sound a bit less vague. I want to see more... I guess, more personality from Evvy... a lot of MS was her having to prove herself and being very feisty. I guess more interaction with people, really, and more of a plot, and more magical training like in SM. I think MS really departed from the formula, so it'll be nice to have more Rosethorn and a wider world than Starns to look at, as well as multiple viewpoints.

The preview on Amazon is awesome! I can't possibly wait...*groans* I'm not sure whether to be sad or happy about China being the antagonist. I like antagonists, but this is based so much on real life that it's also a bit shameful. Even if I don't live in China. [br/] It's pretty blatnatly China and Tibet, what with the boy God-King and all, but exacerbated. I really liked the eager Evvy I saw in the preview and tart Rosethorn, though she goes dreamy for one moment over the Emperor's famous gardens. Apparently, they're in Gyongxe for 4 months and are about to leave when the Emperor's invitation comes and they go to Yangjing instead.

For my fellow Australians: I called a couple of bookstores yesterday to see when BM would be available. Both of them had it on order for October 1, but the sales girl in Dymocks said orders due to arrive at the beginning of the month usually come in a bit earlier, so it should be available around the 24th. Fingers crossed! I also found that preview on Amazon, imaginemi, and it is very awesome! It's made waiting even more difficult, though. I'll be interested to see how Tammy handles Yanjing / China as an antagonist. I don't think it's necessarily problematic in itself, provided she constructs Yanjingyi culture as complex and multifaceted, and doesn't have the foreign protagonists singlehandedly win the war (which I very much doubt she will).
