Words: 411
Summary: It’s at the dinner table when it hits Alanna.
Notes: Dedicated to Allie, for betaing this for me
“Oh, Keladry.” Alanna embraces Kel, tears pricking her eyes.
It was the first time in months they has seen each other, now that the Scanran War was over, and normality was just returning.
“Please, come to Pirate’s Swoop with me, Kel. Even George has been asking for you.”
Kel’s eyes flicker, a spark slightly alighting her hazel eyes, but
Alanna fails to see through her happiness.
“Well,” Kel starts, “I’d love to come for a week.”
“Wonderful!” Alanna replies. “I feel like we have so much to catch up on-”
“Which we do,” Kel finishes. Alanna laughs, grinning like a dog. Kel looks down, knowing that what she had done was irreversible.
It’s at the dinner table when it hits Alanna.
Those silent looks, full of longing, masked by a simple question.
A futile war brews in Alanna. I couldn’t have ever expected this from
my two best friends!
Soon, the night is over. George innocently asks Kel if she’d like to
be escorted up to her room. She innocently accepts. Alanna innocently tags along because – heck! – they will not do anything, right?
“George, get up!” Alanna slaps George on the shoulder.
“Wha – what?”
“I say, get up!”
“Please, Alanna. It’s like seven in the morning.” says George, looking more than a little scared.
“I know about you and Keladry, dearest.” Alanna says coolly, in her
most mocking tone. George freezes. In that moment, he knows it will be useless trying to deny the Lioness. His feelings for Kel are growing rapidly without constraint.
Alanna stiffens, too, at his lack of rejection. But in her Lioness way,
George must know there’s no use trying to hide it when, when love is etched across his whole face.
So much for her.
And none for me. Alanna ends bitterly.
George sighs, and reaches for Alanna, hoping to, to do what? Plead for help? Kneel before her?
Alanna shoots him a look that nearly kills him. It is over. It is
done, and he is helpless. He concedes. “Alanna…”
“I can barely stand to look at you,” she whispers.
He wants her to kick him, throw a vase across the room, anything but this ominous fury. This quiet Lioness, this resenting Lioness can be no good. Before anything else happens, George leaps out of bed and runs, sad and embarrassed.
Alanna smiles, pleased. George must know of her brewing lethal plan, and she is glad.
