Title: In Bloom Rating: G Prompt: #45 Passion Word Count: 226 Summary (and any Warnings): Crane gives Briar some work in the greenhouse. Sequel to Healing.
Briar could feel eyes on his back. He could always feel eyes on his back. "Skulking, though not without its uses, requires some practise," he commented, mildly. He stepped back and considered the sapling in front of him with a critical eye. "You tread too heavily."
He heard the sudden release of breath, the smothering of an irritated sigh.
"I suppose you would know about such things," said Crane stiffly, walking around to the other side of the bench. Thief, the implication rested on his tongue.
Briar shrugged, ducking his head to hide his smile. "I haven't stolen anything."
"Yet."
This time Briar laughed. A sudden bloom of green, and Crane glanced down to see that the young plant had budded. Something strange prickled along his skin. He looked up in time to catch one final glimpse of tanned skin and white teeth before Briar leaned forward and clipped the bud off, frowning.
"Was that really necessary?" Crane asked. Despite having worked within the greenhouse for so long, and being in the presence of magic daily, the thrill that such things were possible was always bright and expectant.
"Sometimes, you have to be cruel to be kind," said Briar. His mind was evidently already elsewhere as he bent to tag the sapling. Crane stood and watched him for a moment longer, before returning to his work.

I could've sworn I reviewed this already. Shame on me.
I like how their conversation is new territory, while still rehashing all of the same grievances they always toss at each other.
