Title: Culture Shock Rating: G Prompt: #37 Summary: From Sarain to Tortall. The transition for Buri. A/N: What? You thought she would go quietly?
It was different, this place. No more people glaring hatred at her or attacking Thayet. No more assassins hiding around the corner or hunger thinning her face. No more of the constant danger.
But with that came a lack of excitement. The constant edge that her homeland had caused dulled, replaced by the boredom of court punctuated by calls to help out the Riders. The king had replaced her as object of Thayet’s attention, although she knew she still held a special place in the queen’s heart. No one leapt at her and only a few conservatives glared. Many were awed by her, constantly watching her and posing questions. She had to get used to the new gods, the different beliefs and concepts these people had. The amour, the fighting styles even the food was different.
Yes, Tortall was very different to Sarain. She wasn’t sure she liked the repetitive lifestyle she had there. But it was safe, for her and more importantly for Thayet. Buri wasn’t sure if she liked this place. For Thayet though, she would stay. Maybe it would grow on her. And it did, as she became accustomed to the new culture.
But it was never what she wanted.

Oh, I like this. I've said before I think we need more culture-shock stuff, and this definitely fits the bill. Awesome fic.

Thanks! I'm thinking about a sequel, although it will be more based on people. Probably more Acquired Taste oriented than culture shock.

This is wonderful. I like how you explored Buri's feelings about Tortall and leaving, and how it isn't all happy and fluffy.

This is such a fascinating concept to explore. I really like how you conveyed Buri's resignation to adapt to Tortall for Thayet - it's wonderful.
