Title: Heartache
Rating: G
Character: Tobe
Event: Love Long Jump
Words: 411
Summary: Tobe thinks about what love means to him.
It was strange for Tobe to think about love. It wasn’t something he’d experienced before. Sure, auld Eulama said that she loved him – but since that was only when she’d been drinking and usually ended with her passed out on the floor he didn’t think that counted. He’d definitely never had that warm, fuzzy feeling that filled his whole body and left him feeling safe and comfortable.
He had that feeling now, at Haven. He might not have been a refugee but he still saw the camp as his refuge, his own personal Haven. There was so many people to love, and be loved by. Lady Kel was the obvious first one. Tobe loved her fiercely and was sure that she loved him too. There were times he thought she wanted to hug him, but she didn’t. He was glad for that. He was still new to this love thing and wasn’t sure yet where he stood physical displays of affection.
But it wasn’t just Lady Kel that he loved. Tobe also loved his friends, both his animal friends and his human friends. It was the first time Tobe had had human friends and he decided he liked it. It was especially nice to have friends his age, like Gydo and Loesia and the others in his spear class. Tobe didn’t think it was strange that his closest friends were girls – he didn’t have the social conditioning to teach him that girls had cooties. All he saw were two nice girls in a similar situation to him, whom he could work with and have fun with and, most importantly, be comfortable with. Tobe wasn’t an expert but he was sure that counted as love.
He had so many other new friends that it was getting hard to keep track of them all. There was Fanche and Saefas and Gil the convict soldier and Einur the cook and even Sir Neal the healer mage. There was Hoshi and Jump and the sparrows and Peachblossom, who Tobe thought was probably his best friend, even if others thought he was cantankerous and mean.
Thinking about all his friends made Tobe’s heart hurt. But it wasn’t like the old pains he had from hunger or beatings. It was a good hurt; a happy hurt. It was the hurt of his heart being full of feelings that Tobe had never experienced before but wouldn’t swap for anything in the world. He was a very lucky boy.
