Title: Hideaways
Rating: PG-13
Couple: Roald/Shinko
Event: 4x100 word relay
Words: 400
Summary: There are a few things that go unsaid.
envy
"You can do so much that I can't."
Shinko turns her head, a wisp of hair escaping its braid. "Beg pardon?"
"With people," he elaborates, spreading his hands. "When I am their king-- I am supposed to be this impartial figurehead, worshiped instead of loved. One cannot love a king the same way they love a queen. People are passionate about my father, but they don't love him."
"You aren't your father," she reminds him, "and that's good for the realm." But she sees the longing in his eyes to belong, and wonders how much farther it will take him.
greed
He will have a kingdom, but it will never be enough. He has the perfect wife, and it will never be enough.
Roald watches Kel slip and slide her way through her relationship with Neal's cousin, turning dizzy and giddy for the first time in her life. He watches Neal and Yukimi blunt their respective sharp edges and ease into each other. He watches everyone fall happily in love, and wonders what it is like.
He has Shinko all to himself, holds the pedestal he places her on, but he always wants more of her.
She never gives him enough.
pride
She won't touch him after they fight. Their arguments are undercut with cold and in her anger she freezes him out.
In their bed she turns her back to him, building herself a wall of snow-white sheets between them. Roald knows that if he reaches out a hand she will wrap herself in fabric and pad down the hall to a place where he cannot follow.
It doesn't matter if he is right or she is wrong. It never matters in the after-hours. The frost may melt between them, but it will take much longer for the ice to thaw.
lust
Trapped in the North, and he's going mad. Roald cannot get her out of his head-- her figure is imprinted on his frontal lobes, her scent follows him everywhere, and he is on the brink of insanity.
It aches in the pit of his stomach, because all he wants to do is grab her and kiss her hard up against a wall. He's never felt this way about anyone and what's more, he never expected to feel it in regards to Shinkokami.
All the poetry he's read-- he gets it now, and he's never going to get over the want.
