Title: Missing
Rating: PG
Character: Tobe
Event: 4x100 Word Relay
Words: 400
Summary: Tobe considers the things he is missing in his life (mild implied violence)
Envy
Tobe likes to watch the other children playing in the street, wishing he could join in. Wishing they would invite him – or even just notice him. Sometimes he sees their eyes flicker his way, but they never look at him long. Their parents have warned them about this half-breed orphan; told them not to associate with him.
He wishes he had parents.
Tobe watches the other children as they play. Watches the ball change direction as it bounced off their shoes. Watches their clean shirts slowly get dirty and sweat-soaked. Watches them take for granted everything he doesn’t have…but wants.
Greed
Tobe is a hoarder. He hoards everything he can. Money, food, clothes. Anything he can hide in his tiny room. Nothing stays very long. The food gets eaten or given to the animals he sneaks out to visit. Alvik takes all but the smallest coins if he finds them on Tobe, as “payment for all the trouble he causes”.
Tobe is told to be grateful for what he has. He has food. A dry place to stay. Clothes to keep him…not warm, but not cold either. But Tobe wants more.
But what he wants, he’s not sure how to get.
Lust
Tobe doesn’t ask for much. There may be much he needs – more food, a kind word, fewer bruises – but he doesn’t ask for them. He knows he won’t get them.
Tobe is still young. He doesn’t know what desire feels like, though he observes it in those around him.
But Tobe knows what it’s like to hunger after something with all his being. To crave it and to seek it out at any cost. He even endures the beatings Alvik doles out when he finds him in the stable again. He endures anything to spend more time with his horses.
Pride
Tobe works hard all day, running errands for the rich guests who barely even notice he’s there. They thrust money into his hand as payment for menial tasks so easy even a child like him can do it without even glancing at his face.
Occasionally one notices him; coos over him; makes promises. Offers him anything he asks for. But Tobe never accepts. He might be worth nothing but he has his pride. He’ll take nothing and ask for nothing.
Most of all he won’t get his hopes up.
Until the day a strange girl-knight comes riding into his life.
