Title: Changes
Rating: G
Character: Tobe
Event: 400 Word Dash
Words: 400
Summary: Tobe begins to see changes in his life, not all of which are to his liking.
The girl-knight was strange. Not because she was a girl - a lady - and a knight. Tobe didn’t know enough about the politics of the realm to understand the problems there, or even recognise that there was a problem. No, it was the strange array of friends she had. Horses, sparrows, a dog. Tobe liked those friends, understood them – especially the big gelding with the fierce temper and warm heart. It was her other friends that Tobe was unsure about – the human ones. Especially the tall mage-knight with the strange healing magic. Like the girl-lady-knight, he was different to the other nobles Tobe had served in the inn. He even knew about lice. Tobe wasn’t always sure about much, but he was sure that most normal nobles didn’t know anything about lice. That he was the girl-lady-knight’s best friend was further proof that she was strange.
But the mage-knight was someone Tobe could get used to. Her obsession with hot baths and cleanliness was something else entirely. He didn’t understand how anyone could bathe in hot water every day – and the lady-knight actually seemed to like it. As the long train of knights, soldiers, horses and supplies crawled further north, he began to hope that her promise not to expect hot baths every night would come true. Most of the villages they stopped at were not as big as Queensgrace and so could not supply hot water to everyone. Unfortunately, this hope was dashed when they reached Fort Giantkiller and then the refugee camp where they were to set up home. Hot baths seemed to be the standard in headquarters and there didn’t seem to be anyway Tobe could get out of them.
Strangely though, as time went on, Tobe didn’t seemed to mind them as much. As his life in Queensgrace became nothing more than a dim memory, the good food and good habits slowly transformed Tobe into the happy, healthy ten year old boy he was supposed to be. His days settled into a routine – rising at dawn, having breakfast and doing chores, then staff practice. He made friends with the other children in the camp. And sometimes, when she thought he wasn’t looking, he thought he saw a look of pride on his mistress’ face. This, more than anything, was what made Tobe happy. He would do anything to make his Lady Kel proud of him.
