Title: Things You Can't Say in Mess Halls Rating: PG Prompt: #4, Food. Summary: "Don't you dare, Evin Larse. You are not ruining the first hot meal I've had in two weeks." Evin finds himself faced with some angry and disgusted messmates. AKA why not to interfere with Riders and food. **** Miri choked, coughed, and put down her fork. Reaching for her cup, she glared at her friend. "I was eating." He chuckled, helping himself to her plate, as he always did. "I wasn't stopping you from eating, was I?" He was grinning and she longed to make him pay for this. She made a face at him and shuddered. "Goddess, Evin, that was disgusting! And you eat your own food." She yanked her plate to the right, away from him. "Miri, did I tell you..." She pointed her fork at him. "Don't you dare, Evin Larse. You are not ruining the first hot meal I've had in two weeks." He held up his hands innocently. "I was just talking. It would be a shame if you stabbed me." "No, it wouldn't," Commander Buri muttered, passing by with her own tray in hand. Evin frowned. "What? I only said..." Miri groaned softly. She really should have come to the mess later, after her bath. "We know what you said," one of her messmates put in, helpfully. "Some of us are trying to eat, Larse."

Cute! Now I want to know what Evin said, but knowing him, it was likely something highly inappropriate for dinner-table talk.

Cute! Now I want to know what Evin said, but knowing him, it was likely something highly inappropriate for dinner-table talk. Thank you. ... Miri wouldn't tell me what exactly what it was he said, but if squicked veteran Riders? It was definitely something inappropriate. I love innocent!Evin, who is all: "who, me?" Verasque: Heh. It was something that did disgust his messmates. Miri's busy wondering why the midwife didn't drown that sodding Player at birth. @isha: I know. Isn't Rider fic fun? Thank-you.

Hee! I also wanted to know what it was that Evin said!
I like how you used the meal as a minor background point, the social setting through which you got to write about your characters. There have been lots of drabble that brought the food itself to the forefront of the drabble, and it's nice to see that people are getting both kinds of use out of the prompt.

You can make up something. Food and meals are a great social setting, if you ask me. And thanks.

You know, I know people like that!
I like the implied close relationship between Miri and Evin (...helping himself to her plate, as he always did. pretty much says it), in spite of the fact that right now he's driving her nuts. And the way the Riders are so informal/egalitarian, even the Commander gets involved in the debate. Very cute!

So do I. Usually of the male persuasion. In my own personal fanon, inside my head, Buri knows Evin is an asset. But he's a horrible soldier in the proper sense of the word (following orders, chain of command, behaving, etc.) and she sometimes really *does* want to drown him
