Title: Letting Go
Rating: PG
Prompt: #76 'New beginnings'
Summary: Slowly - quite slowly - Lalasa had realised that the only thing holding her back from her new beginning was herself.
Lalasa and Tian laughed over their work, trying to stifle the peals as to not disturb the ladies working in the next room. As she wiped the tears from her cheeks, trying to keep her giggles as quietly as possible, Lalasa relished in the ache in her stomach, the loss of control true mirth brought.
It was not a feeling she was used to, or had thought she would get back again.
Even though there were so many changes, after she left her father's house. She could have become a new person on the travels to Corus, but she hadn't. She had held onto the fear and expectations and her legs had trembled the entire way. She could have embraced a new life when Kel opened her door and agreed to hire her as a servant (one the obviously self-sufficient young lady really didn't need), but she hadn't. Perhaps it was all the fear that came with a new place and expectations, but she was still scared all the time.
She had spent her first weeks in the castle terrified, wondering how she could leave her old life behind, and still feel like she was in the exact same place as before.
But, of course, change doesn't happen all at once. She was still the same person as long as she held onto all the fears her father and brother had beat into her. But she wasn't the same; she wasn't the same girl at all.
She knew how to fight. She had friends - human and animal alike - that would defend her vigorously, without backing down. She had talent, she could make beautiful things, and was appreciated for that, for being her.
And, slowly, quite slowly, she realised that the only thing holding her back from her new beginning was herself.
Letting go was not the same as forgiveness. She did not forgive them. But she was giving herself permission to move away from them, to move on and maybe (just maybe, she thought looking up at Tian and smiling softly) to find her own place.
This was the start of the life she wanted. She held Lian's hand and laughed as she let everything else go.
