Falling
The first time she takes a bribe for a bigger crime than is seemly, she tells herself that the careless foist will get picked up in time, and she might as well make some coin off him beforehand. The second time? Leastways she’s taking silver and not gold. And on and on, until the only phrase in her head as coin changes hand is “at least this isn’t for murder.”
…Then one day it is, and she is out of excuses. Out of control too, because the thrill of the illicit has caught her up in a way straight work never could.
