Title: Forced Hands Rating: PG Summary: Rosto doesn't forget easily. Post-Bloodhound, pre-Mastiff.
Everyone has a breaking point, he knows. His dealer puts down the last hand, making sure Rosto has the better cards, as he has been doing for the whole evening. This is not how the game is usually played. You’re supposed to lose a few hands, just to keep up a semblance of legitimacy. Then again, the Rogue has never had much patience for legitimacy. His opponent is desperate; he’s lost all his money. Finally, Rosto sees him tug a card from his sleeve, hidden there from a previous hand. Rosto had not remarked on it at the time, giving him the confidence to use it now. The move isn’t as sloppy as he expected, actually. He might have been a good rusher for the Corus Rogue—except this isn’t just any cove he’s playing against tonight. It’s not as if Rosto purposely sought to ruin the man. He was the one foolish enough to think he could just swagger into his tavern and gamble with the Piper. His own hand was forced to force the other man's. Rosto grabs his opponent’s fingers, still holding on to the secreted card. “Cheaters never prosper, Master Rowan,” Rosto tells him, his smile as thin as a Shang blade. As his men muscle the man away, Rosto finds himself looking across the street at the familiar building. Yes, he thinks, cheaters never prosper. And every cheater has a breaking point.
