Summary: Cythera has her own reasons for not wanting to undergo the traditional rite of passage for Corus women

"Prince Jonathan is like a rite of passage," Gwynnen announced, fixing a pin into her hair. "You know, like... being able to wear your hair up. Every girl - well, any lady who's any lady has kissed him. Your future husband will expect it of you."
Cythera toyed with her bracelets, hoping her face hadn't turned too red. "What if he doesn't want to kiss me?"
Gwynnen flapped her hand dismissively, attention still mostly on the mirror. "Darling, of course he will. He has this move, where he tells you he's spent too long indoors today, and would you care to accompany him outside? Then, he'll swoop."
At this, Cythera was silent, merely staring ahead at her reflection. That, more than her replies, caught Gwynnen by surprise, and she turned to face her friend.
"What is it? Oh, Cythera, everybody does it. Your husband will have kissed a lot of wrong women. You could do worse than the prince."
Cythera shrugged at her, too shy to voice her opinions. It did not, however, seem a good idea to her to go kissing other men if you had your eye on somebody else. Particularly if that man happened to be the prince's cousin.
