Title: Wrapping Presents
Rating: G
Words: 364
Prompt: #58 - "You're more trouble than you're worth."
Summary: Maura and Alan celebrate their first Midwinter together
Note: This is for Rosie. I hope Maura and Alan came out okay!
“What is this?” Maura raised an eyebrow, staring at the sight in front of her. The floor of the small sitting room was almost entirely covered with paper, glue and ribbon.
Alan grinned sheepishly from the middle of the mess. “I was, er, wrapping presents.” He glanced around the room. “It took more effort than I expected.”
A giggle escaped Maura’s lips. “It looks like a… festive warzone.” She gingerly approached the mess. “You could have just asked me for help; I’m an expert wrapper.”
“Ah, but then you’d have seen your presents, wouldn’t you?” Alan shook his head in mock disapproval. “I couldn’t have that.” He stood, brushing paper clippings off his pants. “I have already escorted Lord Theodore from the room; I knew you’d sent him to spy for you.”
Maura stepped around the paper, stopping far enough away from her husband to inspect his appearance. “I was wondering why he was sitting alone in the hallway.” She plucked a piece of pink ribbon from his reddish-blonde curls. “Besides, I thought by now you’d have realized that I don’t ask Lord Theodore to do anything; he has a mind of his own.”
Alan reached out, pulling his wife close. “A likely story,” he said skeptically. “Though I don’t profess to be privy to his innermost thoughts.” He brushed a stay strand of hair from her face, delighting in the way she still flushed at his touch.
“I can’t wait to give you your presents,” Maura said. “I really want your first Dunlath Midwinter to be special.” She squeezed Alan tight.
“How could it not be special, when I’m here with you?” Alan asked. “These past four months have been the best of my life.” Maura buried her face in his chest, and they stood quietly for a moment, just enjoying each other.
Finally, Alan broke the silence. “I should probably mention now that I’m not sure you’re allowed to actually open your presents. I didn’t spend hours wrapping them for you to just rip it all off.”
“So my presents are actually just immaculately wrapped packages?” Maura asked drily. She sighed. “Nevermind, I’m sure we can always find a use for those.”
