Title: Like Father Rating: PG Prompt: 57, In His Image Summary: Jonathan contemplates being his father's son
--
"My father - he - well, he wanted a son exactly like him," Thayet said in a low tone, bitterness lending a sharp edge to her words. "You can imagine I was a disappointment."
Jonathan couldn't help but empathise with the meaning; as Thayet stood there, proud and resilient against the father who didn't want her, he couldn't help memories of his own father overcoming him for a moment. The Peacemaker - the man who didn't like confrontation, who in turn had shunned the practises of his predecessor. The man who had invited his wife's would-be murderer back into the fold, who would have given Alanna up for dead in the Drell Valley.
Would Roald be proud of the son he had raised, Jonathan wondered, or would the passive pacifist have been fearful of Jon's approaching reign?
It didn't matter, he decided, in a fierce and sudden swell of resolve. Roald was no longer around, and Jonathan would make sure to right the wrongs of his father.
He didn't - couldn't - know that Roald had made a similar vow at the start of his own reign.

Ohhh I like this! I love how you've captured Jon's stubborness and desire to be a 'better' king than his father - whilst at the same time never knowing how similar they were.

Eee, I like this so much. I think what I love the most is that it feels like a tiny aside in a much larger conversation between Thayet and Jon. There's a promise of closeness between them, and in the subject, an understanding of each other's situations. <3

Thanks, guys! Lisa, I'm glad it came across as part of a big discussion; it was the impression I wanted to create, but wasn't sure if I'd managed it.

LOVE love love this! Especially the power (and sense of de ja vu) in the final line.
