Summary: The danger is part of the thrill of addiction.
The door was locked, the curtains drawn, and only a single candle was lit. Mithros forbid anyone see more than a sliver of light to indicate his presence. Now was not a time to be disturbed. The consequences would be immeasurable in their terror, and likely to haunt him for the rest of his natural life.
It had started from within, like a spot of rot in a basket of peaches slowly contaminating the rest of the fruit. One of his officers had come to him with news of the problem, bearing a sample as evidence. There was someone on the inside, making illicit distributions, converting the people under his command. He was helpless to watch as one by one his soldiers were insatiably obsessed with this new recreation. Even he, having already failed in attempts to identify and eliminate the infiltrator, had fallen victim.
Using his knife, Evin pried a floorboard away from its fellows and removed the contents of the hiding space. Huddling close to the candle, he cradled his guilty pleasure in his hands, reveling in the thrill of secrecy.
He knew the things were full of trite and unnecessarily graphic prose and may or may not be making less-than-subtle commentary on some of his own activities, but the silly books were just so ridiculously addictive.
