Title: A Many Splendoured Thing Rating: PG13 Prompt: #44 rejection Summary: Jonathan is the last to know. A/N: For Kat.
Jon took her hand from his chest and kissed her palm. There was one candle still burning by the bed, and it bathed her soft skin in a gentle glow of light.
"You're going to marry her, aren't you," said Cythera, resting her cheek on his hipbone, avoiding his eyes. Her other hand smoothed out wrinkles in the dark, satin sheets.
"Thayet and I are friends," he said.
"And you are a fool," she said, sitting up to meet his gaze, "if that is what you truly believe."
Jon frowned to himself as she slipped out of his grasp and walked across the room, the sway of her hips and the dip of her spine muddling his thoughts further. He had no intention of marrying. The foreign princess was intelligent, and, yes, beautiful, but that was hardly the basis for a royal marriage.
"Jonathan, I care for you," said Cythera, coming back to stand by the bed. He watched as she stepped into her petticoat, and silently buttoned it up for her when she turned her back to him.
"If you cared for me, you wouldn't think me a fool."
She smiled, and there was something in the tilt of her mouth and the gentleness in her eyes that reminded him of his mother. "Love makes fools of us all."
After she had left, he sat in bed for a long while. Then he leaned across and blew out the candle, plunging the room into darkness.

The candle metaphor, and the darkness, and Cythera/Jonathan - just guh, amazing! I find it interesting (read: sad but raw/honest) that marriage isn't even a question between them though. Cythera is wonderful and sweet but strong in this, I love it. Another beautiful ficlet! Is it on TKO yet? I need to add it to my favourites Thank you!!!!
