Title: Pebbles
Rating: G
Words: 283
Prompt: Ambition (#33)
Summary: Gilmyn and Zenoby of Naxen discuss the future
“Do you like page training?” Zenoby asked, staring out across the lake.
Gilmyn chose a flat black pebble, and flung it out across the surface of Lake Naxen. After three skips, it sank into the water. “I guess so,” he replied. “I mean I like the learning, and the training, but sometimes it’s hard.”
“Grandfather says only hard things are worthwhile,” Zenoby remarked, picking up a rock and mimicking her brother. Her stone sank on its first skip. She frowned. “Do you even want to be a knight?”
Gilmyn picked up another stone. “I think I do; at least, that’s the problem.” He flung it out across the water; four skips, this time.
Zenoby turned to her brother. “Why is that a problem?” she asked, confused.
“Because I don’t want to be a diplomat, or a statesman, like Father seems to expect me to be,” he replied tensely. “I want to fight, and explore, and go on adventures. I don’t want to sit behind a desk and read old laws for the rest of my life.”
Zenoby smiled. “I don’t think Father would mind, honestly.” She reached across and hugged her brother. “Grandfather was Champion, and a General of the King’s Armies,” she reminded him. “Even Father was an active knight once.”
Gilmyn hugged his sister back. “You’re right,” he conceded. “Besides, I have seven more years before anyone expects anything of me.” He let go of his sister. “I’ll race you back to the castle?” Without waiting for an answer, he took off running.
Zenoby reached down and picked up one of the smooth rocks, slipping it in her pocket as a memento. With one last glance at the lake, she ran off after her brother.
