Lianokami looks like her mother.
She is gold in a pallid sea of faces, her eyes like writing charcoal where they should be Conté blue. They should share the tone of her Gift, like her father and cousins.
"You're such a pretty thing, like a doll," her nursemaid says, eyes hazel and hair blonde and skin tanned. Tan is fashionable in the Eastern lands now. She asks for a new maid but doesn't say why, feeling silly.
Lianokami is ten when she goes to Carthak and meets Empress Kalasin's children, brown skin and brown eyes.
