Title: Thrill of the Hunt

Summary: Daine hunts with the wolves.

She can feel it, the rush of the wind in their fur as they take off past her. She hears their howls and joins in the hunt song. She isn’t as fast as them yet, but she’s trying. She can just about keep up with the slowest of the wolves. Sometimes, when he is not leading the hunt, Brokefang, the alpha male, will drop back to run with her. She manages a breathless smile, and he gives her a wolfy smile in return. They rush forward to take their pray. She watches their teeth tear into the flesh of their kill.
When they return to the den, they share the meat. She tears at it with her hands, as they tear at it with their teeth. The pups watch her curiously as she reminds herself that she must cook her meat. For she is not like the wolves, who can eat the meat straight after the kill. She cannot stomach that, gods know she’s tried. So Cloud, who stands next to her fire, also reminds her that her meat must be cooked.
Cloud is afraid of the wolves, but she does not let it show. She does not like the rush of the hunt. It does not thrill her as it does Daine. But she stays because Daine is like her foal, she could not abandon the girl. Cloud eats grass, looking the other direction as the wolves devour their meat. She will never understand the rush these meat eaters get from their hunt.
