Title: Once
Rating: PG
Prompt: #13, Once Upon A Time
Words: 250 words
Summary: They love.
A/N: I found out Katty shipped Jasson/Alinna (Alinna being one of Coram and Rispah’s appallingly monikered offspring) and it set off a terrible, terrible train of thought in my head, for which she will probably want to kill me when she has read this.
***
Once upon a time, there was a prince whose knight-master made sure he knew how to dance the complicated northern reels, and there was a lady who partnered him.
Once upon a time, there was a lady who could put a crossbow bolt through a raider’s heart at fifty paces and didn’t really know what she was, lady or fighter, and there was a prince who told her she was both, and he respected her for it.
Once upon a time there was a strong-willed young woman with her mother’s auburn hair, and an idealistic young man with his grandmother’s compassion.
Once upon a time there was a self-deprecating smile, and the impulse to shake him till his teeth rattled because he was worth everything, and he couldn’t see that.
Once upon a time, there was a betrothal ring given too late, found among his things in an packet marked with her name and filled with a letter from him: If I die...
Once upon a time, there was just one kiss, the comfort of his arms around her and the hope of her sheer bravery, standing there in the line of fire to hold him and tell him she loved him.
Once upon a time, there was Jasson and Alinna, and now there is only a tomb and the memory of his sacrifice- his own life for five hundred others –and Alinna’s stony eyes as she hefts Alan’s sword and cuts the throat of the mage who killed him.
